Living Up to America’s Promise: Practical Immigration Reform.
 
The inscription emblazoned inside the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty reads in part:

• “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free…”
 
Written by Emma Lazarus, these words represent a promise made to immigrants around the world. America must live up to this promise and must enact fair and reasonable immigration reforms that allow hard-working individuals and families to pursue their dreams within our borders while stopping criminals and terrorists from freely entering the country to do harm to U.S. citizens. Stemming the tide of illegal entries into the country must be a key element in any workable plan to reform immigration law.
 
One key element in any immigration reform effort is an approach to the issue of illegal immigrants already inside the U.S. While it is often politically convenient to view these individuals as criminals, they are often the victims of exploitation by unscrupulous employers who use their undocumented status to extract work at extremely low wages. These workers often have little or no control over their employment conditions and may not be able to leave their jobs under threat of deportation or worse.
 
By looking at the problem of immigration reform from a new perspective, it may be possible to create solutions that protect the wages and job opportunities available to U.S. citizens while providing practical pathways to citizenship for immigrants already in the country and those who seek to pursue their own American dreams by moving to the U.S., integrating into the workforce and becoming full members of our society. The Brain Fund supports efforts to achieve humane and practical immigration reform to fulfill the promise made to those seeking freedom and opportunity inside the borders of the United States.
