Four Day Work Week

p1Promoting the Four Day Work Week.

As part of our overall commitment to the well-being of U.S. students and the most beneficial financial and employment arrangements for families, The Brain Fund supports a four-day work week for nearly all employees. Economists and market researchers alike have touted the benefits possible for companies that implement this working schedule. The Netherlands, for example, adopted shorter work weeks decades ago and continues to support the four-day work week for employees in that country. Shortening the work week would produce significant rewards for staff members and companies alike, including the following:

• Improved quality of life for employees who could spend added time with their families or in pursuit of their own interests
• Reduced sick time and improved health, especially for illnesses in which fatigue is implicated as a contributing factor
• Enhanced morale among staff members and improved productivity during hours at work
• Increased focus on mission-critical activities and streamlining of workflows to get more done during the time available
• More effective recruiting of new employees and enhanced retention of current standout performers
• Increased time to participate in the economy as an informed consumer
• Added time to play and bond with younger children during their critical formative years

The Brain Fund believes that shortening the average work week by one day could provide significant benefits for employees and employers alike.
